Factorial formula for binomial coefficients

Statement

Let nn and kk be natural numbers with k≤nk \le n. Then (nk)=n!k! (n−k)!.\binom{n}{k} = \frac{n!}{k!\,(n - k)!}.

Remarks

Equivalently, k! (n−k)! (nk)=n!k!\,(n-k)!\,\binom{n}{k} = n!. In this form the identity has no division. The formula needs k≤nk \le n. For k>nk > n the left side is 00 and (n−k)!(n - k)! has no meaning in the natural numbers. A cancelled form is (nk)=(n)kk!\binom{n}{k} = \frac{(n)_k}{k!}, with the falling factorial (n)k(n)_k.

Explanations

L1 human

Arrange all nn objects in a row in n!n! ways, and take the first kk as the chosen set. Each choice of set appears k! (n−k)!k!\,(n-k)! times, because the first kk and the last n−kn-k objects can be reordered freely.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
