statement proposition

exp z = 1 iff z is an integer multiple of 2πi

Statement

Let z∈Cz \in \mathbb{C}. Then ez=1e^z = 1 if and only if z=2πikz = 2 \pi i k for some integer kk. Here eze^z is the complex exponential of zz.

Remarks

Proof: write z=x+iyz = x + iy with x,yx, y real. Then ez=ex(cos⁡y+isin⁡y)e^z = e^x (\cos y + i \sin y). If ez=1e^z = 1, then ex=∣ez∣=1e^x = |e^z| = 1, so x=0x = 0. Then cos⁡y=1\cos y = 1 and sin⁡y=0\sin y = 0, so y=2πky = 2 \pi k. The converse follows from Euler's formula. It follows that ez=ewe^z = e^w if and only if z−w=2πikz - w = 2 \pi i k for some k∈Zk \in \mathbb{Z}. This is the reason why the complex logarithm has many values.

Explanations

L1 human

The value 11 has size 11 and direction 00. So ez=1e^z = 1 needs a real part 00 and an imaginary part that is a whole number of full turns, that is, a multiple of 2π2\pi.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
