Euclidean vector

Definition

Let nn be a positive integer. A Euclidean vector in the Euclidean space Rn\mathbb{R}^n is an element v=(v1,…,vn)v = (v_1, \dots, v_n) of Rn\mathbb{R}^n. The real numbers v1,…,vnv_1, \dots, v_n are the components of vv. For two points A=(a1,…,an)A = (a_1, \dots, a_n) and B=(b1,…,bn)B = (b_1, \dots, b_n), the vector from AA to BB is AB→=(b1−a1,…,bn−an).\overrightarrow{AB} = (b_1 - a_1, \dots, b_n - a_n). The sum of two vectors uu and vv is u+v=(u1+v1,…,un+vn)u + v = (u_1 + v_1, \dots, u_n + v_n). The product of a real number cc and a vector vv is cv=(cv1,…,cvn)c v = (c v_1, \dots, c v_n). The zero vector is 0=(0,…,0)0 = (0, \dots, 0).

Remarks

Two arrows give the same vector exactly when a translation moves one arrow onto the other. For each three points AA, BB and CC, the vectors satisfy AB→+BC→=AC→\overrightarrow{AB} + \overrightarrow{BC} = \overrightarrow{AC}. With the sum and the product by real numbers, the vectors of Rn\mathbb{R}^n form a real vector space of dimension nn.

Explanations

L1 human

A vector tells you how to move: how far, and in which direction. The vector (3,4)(3, 4) in the plane says "move 3 to the right and 4 up". It does not matter where you start, so arrows of the same length and direction are the same vector.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
