Euclidean group

Description

The Euclidean group E(n)\mathrm{E}(n) is the set of all Euclidean isometries of Rn\mathbb{R}^n, with the composition of maps as the operation. It is a group: the identity map is the neutral element, and the inverse of an isometry is an isometry. Each element has the form x↦Ax+bx \mapsto A x + b, with AA in the orthogonal group O(n)\mathrm{O}(n) and b∈Rnb \in \mathbb{R}^n. The direct isometries, with det⁡A=1\det A = 1, form a subgroup SE(n)\mathrm{SE}(n) of index 22. Its elements are the rigid motions.

Remarks

The translations form an abelian normal subgroup T≅RnT \cong \mathbb{R}^n, and E(n)/T≅O(n)\mathrm{E}(n) / T \cong \mathrm{O}(n). The group E(n)\mathrm{E}(n) has n(n+1)/2n(n+1)/2 degrees of freedom: 33 for n=2n = 2 and 66 for n=3n = 3. The group is not abelian for n≥2n \geq 2. For example, a rotation about the origin and a translation do not commute in general. The symmetry group of each figure in Rn\mathbb{R}^n is a subgroup of E(n)\mathrm{E}(n).

Explanations

L1 human

The Euclidean group collects all the ways to move space without changing distances. Two such moves done one after the other give again such a move, and each move can be undone. In the plane, three numbers fix a direct move: two for a shift and one for a turn.

  • section Invariants: a table of the main invariants (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
