Directrix

Definition

Let QQ be a non-degenerate conic section in the Euclidean plane R2\mathbb{R}^2 that is not a circle. Let FF be a focus of QQ. For a point PP and a line ℓ\ell, let d(P,ℓ)d(P, \ell) be the distance from PP to ℓ\ell. A directrix of QQ for the focus FF is a line ℓ\ell that does not contain FF, such that for a real number e>0e > 0: Q={ P∈R2  :  d(P,F)=e d(P,ℓ) }.Q = \{\, P \in \mathbb{R}^2 \;:\; d(P, F) = e \, d(P, \ell) \,\}.

Remarks

Each focus of QQ has exactly one directrix, and the number ee is the eccentricity of QQ. The conic is an ellipse if e<1e < 1, a parabola if e=1e = 1 and a hyperbola if e>1e > 1. For the ellipse x2a2+y2b2=1\frac{x^2}{a^2} + \frac{y^2}{b^2} = 1 or the hyperbola x2a2−y2b2=1\frac{x^2}{a^2} - \frac{y^2}{b^2} = 1, the directrices are the lines x=±a2/cx = \pm a^2 / c, for the foci (±c,0)(\pm c, 0). A circle has no directrix in the Euclidean plane.

Explanations

L1 human

For a parabola, the directrix is the line in its definition: each point is as far from the focus as from the directrix. For an ellipse, each point is closer to the focus than to the directrix, by a fixed factor e<1e < 1. For a hyperbola, the factor is greater than 11.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 7 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
