statement proposition

Differentiable functions are continuous

Statement

Let II be an open interval, let f ⁣:I→Rf \colon I \to \mathbb{R}, and let a∈Ia \in I. If ff is differentiable at aa, then ff is continuous at aa.

Remarks

For x≠ax \ne a, write f(x)−f(a)=f(x)−f(a)x−a⋅(x−a)f(x) - f(a) = \frac{f(x) - f(a)}{x - a} \cdot (x - a). The first factor tends to f′(a)f'(a) and the second to 00. The converse fails. The absolute value is continuous but not differentiable at 00. The Weierstrass function is continuous and nowhere differentiable. Mathlib states it as HasDerivAt.continuousAt.

Explanations

If a graph has a tangent line at a point, it cannot jump there. A jump would make the slopes of the secant lines blow up.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Limit point of a set definition
  2. Limit of a function definition
  3. Continuity at a point definition
  4. Derivative definition
  5. Differentiable function definition
  6. Differentiable functions are continuous statement

What depends on this

20 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
