statement proposition

Determinant of a 2 by 2 matrix

Statement

Let KK be a commutative ring and let a,b,c,d∈Ka, b, c, d \in K. Then det⁡(abcd)=ad−bc,\det \begin{pmatrix} a & b \\ c & d \end{pmatrix} = ad - bc, where det⁡\det is the determinant.

Remarks

This is the Leibniz formula for n=2n = 2, with the identity and one transposition. Over R\R, ∣ad−bc∣\abs{ad - bc} is the area of the parallelogram spanned by the columns (a,c)(a, c) and (b,d)(b, d). For example, det⁡(1234)=4−6=−2\det \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 2 \\ 3 & 4 \end{pmatrix} = 4 - 6 = -2.

Explanations

L1 human

The determinant of a 2×22 \times 2 matrix is the product of the main diagonal minus the product of the other diagonal. It is zero exactly when one column is a multiple of the other, over a field. Then the matrix squeezes the plane onto a line or a point.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 9 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
