Dedekind cut
Definition
A Dedekind cut is a pair of subsets of the rational numbers with these properties:
- and are nonempty, and ;
- if , and , then ;
- has no greatest element.
Remarks
The set determines the cut, because . Thus some authors call itself the cut. The cut with corresponds to . Here has no least element. The set of all cuts, ordered by inclusion of the lower sets, is a complete ordered field with suitable operations.
Explanations
L1 human
Cut the rational number line at one point. Put the numbers to the left in and the numbers to the right in . When the cut is at a gap of , such as , the cut itself stands for the missing number.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
