statement theorem

Convergents converge to the number

Statement

Let xx be an irrational real number, and let pn/qnp_n / q_n be the convergents of its continued fraction expansion. Then ∣x−pnqn∣<1qnqn+1≤1qn2\left| x - \frac{p_n}{q_n} \right| < \frac{1}{q_n q_{n+1}} \le \frac{1}{q_n^2} for each n≥0n \ge 0, and pn/qn→xp_n / q_n \to x as n→∞n \to \infty.

Remarks

The convergents with even nn increase toward xx, and the convergents with odd nn decrease toward xx. For a rational xx, the last convergent is equal to xx. Conversely, each infinite simple continued fraction converges to an irrational number, and this number has that continued fraction as its expansion. For example, 355113\frac{355}{113} is a convergent of π\pi, and ∣π−355113∣<3⋅10−7\left| \pi - \frac{355}{113} \right| < 3 \cdot 10^{-7}.

Explanations

L1 human

The convergents of xx get closer and closer to xx, and the error is smaller than one over the square of the denominator. This makes them very good rational approximations of xx.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
