Complementary subspaces

Definition

Let FF be a field, let VV be a vector space over FF, and let UU and WW be subspaces of VV. The subspaces UU and WW are complementary when V=U⊕WV = U \oplus W, that is, when U+W=VU + W = V and U∩W={0}U \cap W = \{0\}. Then WW is a complement of UU in VV.

Remarks

A complement is not unique: in R2\R^2, each line through 00 other than the xx-axis is a complement of the xx-axis. If VV is finite-dimensional and WW is a complement of UU, then dim⁡W=dim⁡V−dim⁡U\dim W = \dim V - \dim U. A complement WW of UU is isomorphic to the quotient space V/UV / U. In an inner product space, the orthogonal complement is one particular complement.

Explanations

L1 human

Two subspaces are complementary when together they fill the space and they share only the zero vector. Each vector then splits in a unique way into a part in each subspace. A line and a plane through the origin in space are complementary when the line does not lie in the plane.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

1 node uses this node, directly or through other nodes.
