Companion matrix
Definition
Let be a field, let , and let be a monic polynomial over . The companion matrix of is the matrix
Remarks
The characteristic polynomial and the minimal polynomial of both equal . In the basis , the map of sends to for . Some authors use the transpose of this matrix as the companion matrix. Companion matrices are the blocks of the rational canonical form.
Explanations
L1 human
For each monic polynomial, the companion matrix is a matrix with exactly that characteristic polynomial. It shifts each basis vector to the next one, and the polynomial fixes the image of the last one. So questions about roots of polynomials become questions about eigenvalues of matrices.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
