Chromatic polynomial

Definition

Let GG be a finite graph. For each natural number kk, let P(G,k)P(G, k) be the number of colourings of GG with the set of colours {1,…,k}\{1, \dots, k\}. There is a unique polynomial P(G,x)P(G, x) whose value at each natural number kk is P(G,k)P(G, k). It is the chromatic polynomial of GG.

Remarks

For the path graph P3P_3, P(P3,x)=x(x−1)2P(P_3, x) = x(x-1)^2. For the complete graph, P(Kn,x)=x(x−1)⋯(x−n+1)P(K_n, x) = x(x-1)\cdots(x-n+1). For an edge ee, the deletion–contraction rule says P(G,x)=P(G−e,x)−P(G/e,x)P(G, x) = P(G - e, x) - P(G / e, x). Here G/eG / e merges the two ends of ee. The chromatic number is the smallest positive integer kk with P(G,k)>0P(G, k) > 0.

Explanations

L1 human

The chromatic polynomial counts the proper colourings of a graph with kk colours, for each kk. George David Birkhoff introduced it in 1912 to study the four colour problem.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
