statement proposition

Cancellation laws

Statement

Let GG be a group and let a,b,c∈Ga, b, c \in G. If ab=acab = ac, then b=cb = c. If ba=caba = ca, then b=cb = c.

Remarks

The first law is left cancellation and the second law is right cancellation. To prove the first law, multiply ab=acab = ac on the left by a−1a^{-1}. A consequence is that in the Cayley table of a finite group, no element occurs two times in one row or in one column. The laws can fail in a monoid: in (Z,⋅)(\mathbb{Z}, \cdot), 0⋅1=0⋅20 \cdot 1 = 0 \cdot 2 but 1≠21 \neq 2.

Explanations

L1 human

In a group, you can remove the same element from both sides of an equation, if it is on the same side of each product. This works because each element has an inverse that undoes it. Take care with the side: ab=caab = ca does not give b=cb = c in general.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level

  2. Cancellation laws statement

What depends on this

8 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
