Basis of a topology
Definition
Let be a topological space. A basis of is a set such that each is a union of members of . Equivalently, and for each and each there is with .
Remarks
A family of subsets of a set is a basis of some topology on if and only if two conditions hold. First, the members of cover . Second, for all and there is with . This topology is then unique. The open intervals form a basis of the usual topology of . The intervals with rational endpoints form a countable basis. In a metric space, the open balls form a basis of the metric topology.
Explanations

A basis is a set of building blocks: each open set is a union of blocks. In the plane, you can build each open set from open discs, or from open squares.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
