Augmented matrix

Definition

Let FF be a field. Take a system of linear equations Ax=bAx = b over FF, with coefficient matrix AA of size m×nm \times n and constant vector b∈Fmb \in F^m. The augmented matrix of the system is the m×(n+1)m \times (n+1) matrix [A∣b][A \mid b]. Its first nn columns are the columns of AA, and its last column is bb.

Remarks

The system 2x+y=52x + y = 5, x−3y=0x - 3y = 0 has the augmented matrix (2151−30)\left(\begin{array}{cc|c} 2 & 1 & 5 \\ 1 & -3 & 0 \end{array}\right). Elementary row operations on the augmented matrix do not change the solution set of the system. More generally, [A∣B][A \mid B] denotes the matrix AA with the columns of a matrix BB added on the right.

Explanations

L1 human

The augmented matrix is the full system written as a table of numbers. The vertical bar reminds us where the equals signs were. We do row reduction on this table instead of rewriting the equations each time.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

1 node uses this node, directly or through other nodes.
