statement proposition

Anticommutativity of the cross product

Statement

Let aa and bb be vectors in R3\mathbb{R}^3, and let ×\times be the cross product. Then b×a=−(a×b).b \times a = -(a \times b).

Remarks

With b=ab = a the statement gives a×a=−(a×a)a \times a = -(a \times a), thus a×a=0a \times a = 0 for each vector aa. The proof is a direct computation: each component of b×ab \times a is the component of a×ba \times b with the two products in the other order. The cross product is thus not commutative. For example, e1×e2=e3e_1 \times e_2 = e_3 but e2×e1=−e3e_2 \times e_1 = -e_3.

Explanations

L1 human

If you swap the two factors of a cross product, the result points the other way. Its length stays the same. The right-hand rule shows this: swapping the factors turns your hand over.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level

  2. Anticommutativity of the cross product statement
