Alternating group

Definition

Let nn be a positive integer. The alternating group AnA_n is the set of the even permutations in SnS_n, with composition as the operation.

Remarks

For n≥2n \geq 2, AnA_n is the kernel of the sign homomorphism, so it is a normal subgroup of SnS_n. For n≥2n \geq 2, AnA_n is also the commutator subgroup of SnS_n. The group A3A_3 is cyclic of order 33, and A4A_4 has order 1212. The group AnA_n is abelian if and only if n≤3n \leq 3.

Explanations

L1 human

The alternating group keeps only the even permutations. The product of two even permutations is even, so these form a group. For n≥5n \geq 5 it is one of the most important examples of a simple group.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 13 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
