statement proposition

Adding a multiple of one row to another preserves the determinant

Statement

Let KK be a commutative ring, let AA be an n×nn \times n matrix over KK, and let c∈Kc \in K. Let i≠ji \ne j, and let BB be the matrix that results when cc times row jj of AA is added to row ii. Then det⁡B=det⁡A\det B = \det A, where det⁡\det is the determinant.

Remarks

By linearity in row ii, det⁡B=det⁡A+cdet⁡A′\det B = \det A + c \det A', where A′A' has two equal rows; so det⁡A′=0\det A' = 0. This is the reason why Gaussian elimination computes determinants efficiently. The same holds for columns.

Explanations

L1 human

Adding a multiple of one row to another row shears the box spanned by the rows. A shear does not change the volume. So this row operation keeps the determinant.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 9 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
