statement theorem

Abel's test

Statement

Let ∑an\sum a_n be a convergent real series. Let (bn)(b_n) be a monotone and bounded real sequence. Then the series ∑anbn\sum a_n b_n converges.

Remarks

The sequence (bn)(b_n) converges to some bb, by the monotone convergence theorem. Then ∑anbn=∑an(bn−b)+b∑an\sum a_n b_n = \sum a_n (b_n - b) + b \sum a_n. The first series converges by Dirichlet's test, since bn−bb_n - b is monotone with limit 00. The hypotheses on ∑an\sum a_n are stronger than in Dirichlet's test, and those on (bn)(b_n) are weaker.

History

Niels Henrik Abel proved the test in 1826.

Explanations

L1 human

Multiplying the terms of a convergent series by a bounded monotone sequence of weights keeps convergence. The weights settle down to a limit, so they cannot disturb the series too much.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 10 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
