statement theorem

A convex function on an open interval is continuous

Statement

Let II be an open interval and let f ⁣:I→Rf \colon I \to \mathbb{R} be convex. Then ff is continuous on II.

Remarks

Fix y∈Iy \in I and points x<y<zx < y < z in II. By the slope inequalities, the slopes of chords from yy are bounded for points near yy. So ∣f(w)−f(y)∣≤C∣w−y∣|f(w) - f(y)| \le C |w - y| near yy. On a closed interval this fails. The function on [0,1][0, 1] with f(0)=1f(0) = 1 and f(x)=0f(x) = 0 for x>0x > 0 is convex but not continuous at 00. A convex function on an open interval has one-sided derivatives at every point. Mathlib states continuity as ConvexOn.continuousOn, for open sets.

Explanations

L1 human

A convex function cannot jump inside an open interval. A jump would break the condition that the chords lie above the graph.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 7 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
