Well-order

Definition

Let AA be a set. A well-order on AA is a total order ≤\le on AA such that each nonempty subset of AA has a least element. The pair (A,≤)(A, \le) is a well-ordered set.

Remarks

The usual order on N\mathbb{N} is a well-order. The usual orders on Z\mathbb{Z} and on [0,1][0, 1] are not well-orders: Z\mathbb{Z} and (0,1](0, 1] have no least element. A total order is a well-order exactly when its strict order << is well-founded. The well-ordering theorem says that each set has a well-order.

Explanations

L1 human

In a well-ordered set, each nonempty part has a first element. So you can always say "take the smallest element with this property".

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this
