Permutation

Definition

Let XX be a set. A permutation of XX is a bijection σ:X→X\sigma : X \to X.

The permutations of XX form a group under composition, with the identity map as identity element. This group is the symmetric group on XX, written Sym⁡(X)\operatorname{Sym}(X). For X={1,…,n}X = \{1, \dots, n\} it is written SnS_n.

Remarks

For a finite set X={1,…,n}X = \{1, \dots, n\}, a permutation is often written in one-line notation as the sequence σ(1)σ(2)⋯σ(n)\sigma(1) \sigma(2) \cdots \sigma(n). In this form it is an arrangement of the elements in a row. The number of permutations of an nn-element set is n!n!. A derangement is a permutation with no fixed point.

Explanations

L1 human

A permutation is a rearrangement of the elements of a set. For {1,2,3}\{1, 2, 3\}, the map that sends 1↦21 \mapsto 2, 2↦32 \mapsto 3 and 3↦13 \mapsto 1 is a permutation. In one-line notation it is 231231.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
