Parametric equation of a line

Summary

A parametric equation of a line describes its points as the values of a function of one real parameter tt. The line in R3\mathbb{R}^3 through the point (x0,y0,z0)(x_0, y_0, z_0) with the nonzero direction vector (a,b,c)(a, b, c) has the parametric equations x=x0+at,y=y0+bt,z=z0+ct,t∈R.x = x_0 + a t, \quad y = y_0 + b t, \quad z = z_0 + c t, \qquad t \in \mathbb{R}. In vector form, the line through the point pp with the direction vector v≠0v \neq 0 is the set of the points p+tvp + t v for t∈Rt \in \mathbb{R}. The same form works in Rn\mathbb{R}^n for each n≥2n \geq 2.

Remarks

The line through two distinct points AA and BB has the parametric equation A+t(B−A)A + t(B - A). The values 0≤t≤10 \leq t \leq 1 give the segment from AA to BB, and t=1/2t = 1/2 gives its midpoint. If aa, bb and cc are all nonzero, you can remove tt. The result is the symmetric form x−x0a=y−y0b=z−z0c\frac{x - x_0}{a} = \frac{y - y_0}{b} = \frac{z - z_0}{c}.

Explanations

L1 human

Think of tt as time and of p+tvp + t v as the position of a particle. At time 00 the particle is at pp, and it moves with the constant velocity vv. Its path is the line.
