Monotone function

Definition

Let (P,≤P)(P, \le_P) and (Q,≤Q)(Q, \le_Q) be preorders and let f ⁣:P→Qf \colon P \to Q be a function. The function ff is monotone when, for all a,b∈Pa, b \in P, a≤Pba \le_P b implies f(a)≤Qf(b)f(a) \le_Q f(b).

Remarks

Other names are order-preserving and, for real functions, monotonically increasing or non-decreasing. The function ff is antitone when a≤ba \le b implies f(b)≤f(a)f(b) \le f(a). The map S↦f(S)S \mapsto f(S) on power sets is monotone for ⊆\subseteq.

Explanations

L1 human

A monotone function never reverses the order of two inputs. On R\mathbb{R}, x↦x3x \mapsto x^3 is monotone, and x↦x2x \mapsto x^2 is not, because −2≤1-2 \le 1 but 4>14 > 1.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
