statement theorem
Minkowski's theorem
Statement
Let be a positive integer, and let be a lattice with determinant . Let be a convex set that is symmetric about the origin: implies . If the volume of is greater than , then contains a point of other than .
Remarks
The most common case is , with : a symmetric convex set of volume greater than contains a nonzero integer point. The bound is sharp: the open cube has volume and contains no nonzero integer point. Applications include proofs of Fermat's theorem on sums of two squares and Lagrange's four-square theorem.
History
Hermann Minkowski proved the theorem in 1889. It started the geometry of numbers.
Explanations
L1 human
A large, round, centered region in the plane must contain a lattice point other than the origin. In the plane with , the area must be more than .
What this node needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- edge uses out: each definition that the statement needs (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
