Imaginary unit

Description

The imaginary unit is the complex number i=0+1ii = 0 + 1 i. It satisfies i2=−1i^2 = -1, see i squared is minus one. It is a solution of the equation x2+1=0x^2 + 1 = 0. The other solution is −i-i. In the complex plane, ii is the point (0,1)(0, 1), at distance 11 above 00.

Remarks

The powers of ii repeat with period 44: i0=1i^0 = 1, i1=ii^1 = i, i2=−1i^2 = -1, i3=−ii^3 = -i and i4=1i^4 = 1. Multiplication by ii turns the complex plane by a quarter turn about 00, counterclockwise. In electrical engineering, people often write jj for ii.

Explanations

L1 human

The imaginary unit is a new number whose square is −1-1. No real number has this property, so ii is not on the real number line. It sits one unit above 00 in the plane of complex numbers.

What this node needs for W2
  • section Invariants: a table of the main invariants (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of out (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this
