Identity function

Definition

Let AA be a set. The identity function of AA is the function idA ⁣:A→A\mathrm{id}_A \colon A \to A with idA(a)=a\mathrm{id}_A(a) = a for each a∈Aa \in A.

Remarks

For each function f ⁣:A→Bf \colon A \to B, f∘idA=ff \circ \mathrm{id}_A = f and idB∘f=f\mathrm{id}_B \circ f = f. See function composition. The identity function is a bijection, and it is its own inverse. Its graph is the diagonal {(a,a)∣a∈A}\{(a, a) \mid a \in A\}.

Explanations

L1 human

The identity function does nothing: each input comes out unchanged. It plays the role for composition that the number 11 plays for multiplication.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this

5 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
