definition

Greatest element

Definition

Let (P,≤)(P, \le) be a partially ordered set and let SS be a subset of PP. An element g∈Sg \in S is the greatest element of SS when s≤gs \le g for each s∈Ss \in S.

Remarks

Another name is maximum. By antisymmetry, a set has at most one greatest element. A greatest element is a maximal element and an upper bound of SS that lies in SS. The interval [0,1)[0, 1) in R\mathbb{R} has no greatest element.

Explanations

L1 human

The greatest element beats every other element of the set. In {1,2,3,6}\{1, 2, 3, 6\} under divisibility, 66 is the greatest element, because each element divides 66.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
