definition

Graph of a function

Definition

Let f ⁣:A→Bf \colon A \to B be a function. The graph of ff is the set Γ(f)={(a,f(a))∣a∈A}⊆A×B.\Gamma(f) = \{(a, f(a)) \mid a \in A\} \subseteq A \times B.

Remarks

For a real function f ⁣:R→Rf \colon \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}, the graph is a curve in the plane R2\mathbb{R}^2. Let G⊆A×BG \subseteq A \times B. GG is the graph of a function from AA to BB if and only if each a∈Aa \in A is the first entry of exactly one pair. In the set-theoretic definition of a function, the function and its graph are the same set.

Explanations

L1 human

The graph of f(x)=x2f(x) = x^2 is the parabola {(x,x2)∣x∈R}\{(x, x^2) \mid x \in \mathbb{R}\}. Each vertical line meets it in exactly one point. This is the vertical line test.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
