Dirac measure

Definition

Let XX be a set, let F\mathcal{F} be a σ-algebra on XX, and let x∈Xx \in X. The Dirac measure at xx is the function δx ⁣:F→{0,1}\delta_x \colon \mathcal{F} \to \{0, 1\} with δx(A)={1if x∈A,0if x∉A.\delta_x(A) = \begin{cases} 1 & \text{if } x \in A, \\ 0 & \text{if } x \notin A. \end{cases}

Remarks

δx\delta_x is a probability measure. In terms of the indicator function, δx(A)=1A(x)\delta_x(A) = \mathbf{1}_A(x). The integral of a measurable function ff with respect to δx\delta_x is f(x)f(x). Each probability measure on a countable set XX with the power set as σ-algebra is a sum ∑x∈Xp(x) δx\sum_{x \in X} p(x) \, \delta_x with weights p(x)≥0p(x) \ge 0 of sum 11.

Explanations

L1 human

The Dirac measure puts all the probability on one point. It describes an experiment whose result is certain, such as a coin with heads on both sides.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
