Covariance matrix

Definition

Let X=(X1,…,Xn)TX = (X_1, \dots, X_n)^{\mathsf{T}} be a random vector in Rn\mathbb{R}^n with E[Xi2]<∞E[X_i^2] < \infty for each ii, and let μ=E[X]\mu = E[X] be its mean vector. The covariance matrix of XX is the n×nn \times n matrix Σ=Cov⁡(X)\Sigma = \operatorname{Cov}(X) with entries Σij=Cov⁡(Xi,Xj),1≤i,j≤n.\Sigma_{ij} = \operatorname{Cov}(X_i, X_j), \quad 1 \le i, j \le n. In matrix form, Σ=E[(X−μ)(X−μ)T]\Sigma = E\left[(X - \mu)(X - \mu)^{\mathsf{T}}\right].

Remarks

The diagonal entries are the variances Σii=Var⁡(Xi)\Sigma_{ii} = \operatorname{Var}(X_i). Σ\Sigma is symmetric and positive semidefinite: aTΣa=Var⁡(aTX)≥0a^{\mathsf{T}} \Sigma a = \operatorname{Var}(a^{\mathsf{T}} X) \ge 0 for each a∈Rna \in \mathbb{R}^n. For a real m×nm \times n matrix AA and b∈Rmb \in \mathbb{R}^m, Cov⁡(AX+b)=AΣAT\operatorname{Cov}(AX + b) = A \Sigma A^{\mathsf{T}}. The covariance matrix and the mean vector are the two parameters of the multivariate normal distribution.

Explanations

L1 human

For a random vector, one number is not enough to describe the spread. The covariance matrix collects the variance of each component and the covariance of each pair in one table.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
