Constructible number

Definition

Identify the plane with C\mathbb{C}. A complex number zz is constructible if the point zz can be obtained from 00 and 11 by finitely many straightedge and compass steps. In each step, one adds an intersection point of two distinct lines or circles drawn through, or centred at, points already obtained.

Remarks

A real number xx is constructible if and only if a segment of length ∣x∣|x| can be constructed from a segment of length 11. A complex number a+bia + b i is constructible if and only if aa and bb are constructible. The constructible numbers form a field closed under square roots. The numbers 2\sqrt{2}, 1+3\sqrt{1 + \sqrt{3}} and cos⁡(2π/5)\cos(2\pi/5) are constructible. The numbers 23\sqrt[3]{2} and π\pi are not.

Explanations

L1 human

Start with two points, 00 and 11. Draw lines through points you have, and circles centred at points you have, and mark the new intersections. The constructible numbers are all the points you can reach in this way.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this

10 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
