Combinations with repetition

Definition

Let XX be a set and let kk be a natural number. A kk-combination with repetition of XX is a multiset of size kk with elements in XX. That is a function m:X→Nm : X \to \mathbb{N} with ∑x∈Xm(x)=k\sum_{x \in X} m(x) = k, where m(x)m(x) is the multiplicity of xx.

For natural numbers nn and kk, the multiset coefficient ( ⁣(nk) ⁣)\left(\!\binom{n}{k}\!\right) is the number of kk-combinations with repetition of an nn-element set.

Remarks

The value is ( ⁣(nk) ⁣)=(n+k−1k)\left(\!\binom{n}{k}\!\right) = \binom{n + k - 1}{k}. This is stars and bars. For X={a,b}X = \{a, b\} and k=2k = 2 there are 33 multisets: {a,a}\{a, a\}, {a,b}\{a, b\} and {b,b}\{b, b\}. Unlike a combination, a combination with repetition can use an element more than once.

Explanations

L1 human

A combination with repetition is a choice of kk items from nn kinds. You can take the same kind more than once, and the order does not matter. An example is a bag of 3 fruits from apples, pears and plums.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this

1 node uses this node, directly or through other nodes.
