Choice function

Definition

Let XX be a set of nonempty sets. A choice function on XX is a function c ⁣:X→⋃Xc \colon X \to \bigcup X such that c(S)∈Sc(S) \in S for each S∈XS \in X.

Remarks

For a finite set XX, a choice function exists without any axiom of choice. For the set of nonempty subsets of N\mathbb{N}, the function that sends each subset to its least element is a choice function. The axiom of choice says that each set of nonempty sets has a choice function.

Explanations

L1 human

Think of XX as a collection of boxes, none empty. A choice function names one object in each box. Sometimes a rule gives it, such as "take the smallest number".

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
