Catalan numbers

Definition

The Catalan numbers CnC_n, for natural numbers nn, are defined by the recursion C0=1,Cn+1=∑i=0nCi Cn−i.C_0 = 1, \qquad C_{n+1} = \sum_{i=0}^{n} C_i\, C_{n-i}.

Remarks

The first values, for n=0,1,…,7n = 0, 1, \dots, 7, are 1,1,2,5,14,42,132,4291, 1, 2, 5, 14, 42, 132, 429. The closed formula is Cn=1n+1(2nn)C_n = \frac{1}{n+1} \binom{2n}{n}. CnC_n counts Dyck words of semilength nn and binary trees with nn nodes, and many other families.

Explanations

L1 human

Catalan numbers count many structures that split into a left part and a right part. For example, there are C3=5C_3 = 5 ways to put brackets on a product abcdabcd of four factors: ((ab)c)d((ab)c)d, (a(bc))d(a(bc))d, (ab)(cd)(ab)(cd), a((bc)d)a((bc)d) and a(b(cd))a(b(cd)).

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this

4 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
