statement theorem

Cantor's theorem

Statement

Let AA be a set and let f ⁣:A→P(A)f \colon A \to \mathcal{P}(A) be a function to the power set of AA. Then ff is not surjective. So ∣A∣<∣P(A)∣|A| < |\mathcal{P}(A)|.

Remarks

Proof: let D={a∈A∣a∉f(a)}D = \{a \in A \mid a \notin f(a)\}. If D=f(d)D = f(d) for some d∈Ad \in A, then d∈Dd \in D if and only if d∉Dd \notin D, a contradiction. The map a↦{a}a \mapsto \{a\} is an injection, so ∣A∣≤∣P(A)∣|A| \le |\mathcal{P}(A)|, and the inequality is strict. It follows that there is no largest cardinal. The proof is a form of the diagonal argument, and it is close to Russell's paradox.

Explanations

L1 human

For each set, its set of subsets is strictly larger. For a set with 33 elements, this is 3<83 < 8. For infinite sets, it gives an endless tower of larger and larger infinities.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge about out: the concepts that the statement is about (0 of 1)
  • edge proves in: at least one proof node (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of or illustrates in: one example that shows the statement at work (0 of 1)
  • explanation L2 (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
