Analytic continuation

Summary

Let U⊆VU \subseteq V be open subsets of C\mathbb{C}, with UU nonempty and VV a domain, and let ff be holomorphic on UU. An analytic continuation of ff to VV is a function FF that is holomorphic on VV with F(z)=f(z)F(z) = f(z) for each z∈Uz \in U. By the identity theorem, ff has at most one analytic continuation to VV.

Remarks

The geometric series ∑n≥0zn\sum_{n \ge 0} z^n is holomorphic on the unit disc, and 1/(1−z)1/(1 - z) is its analytic continuation to C∖{1}\mathbb{C} \setminus \{1\}. The Riemann zeta function ∑n≥1n−s\sum_{n \ge 1} n^{-s} on Re⁡s>1\operatorname{Re} s > 1 has an analytic continuation to C∖{1}\mathbb{C} \setminus \{1\}. Continuation along a path is a more general process. Its result can depend on the path: the logarithm continued once around 00 changes by 2πi2\pi i.

Explanations

L1 human

A formula such as a power series often defines a function only on a small region. Analytic continuation extends the function to a larger region in the only possible holomorphic way.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge defines in: at least one definition (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of in: at least two examples (0 of 2)
  • edge not_instance_of in: at least one non-example (0 of 1)
  • edge specializes both: the more general notions and the special cases (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
