Affine space

Definition

Let KK be a field and let VV be a vector space over KK. An affine space over VV is a nonempty set AA with a map A×V→AA \times V \to A, written (p,v)↦p+v(p, v) \mapsto p + v, that has these properties. For each point pp of AA: p+0=pp + 0 = p. For each point pp of AA and all vectors uu and vv of VV: (p+u)+v=p+(u+v)(p + u) + v = p + (u + v). For all points pp and qq of AA, there is exactly one vector vv of VV with p+v=qp + v = q. This vector is written q−pq - p or pq→\overrightarrow{pq}. The elements of AA are the points, and VV is the space of translations of AA. The dimension of AA is the dimension of VV.

Remarks

Each vector space VV is an affine space over itself, with the addition of VV as the action. In particular Rn\mathbb{R}^n is an affine space over Rn\mathbb{R}^n. For all points pp, qq and rr, Chasles's relation holds: (q−p)+(r−q)=r−p(q - p) + (r - q) = r - p. Mathlib calls this structure an additive torsor, AddTorsor. Its definition works for an additive group VV in place of a vector space. A Euclidean space is a real affine space of finite dimension whose space of translations has an inner product.

Explanations

L1 human

In an affine space you can subtract two points to get the arrow from one to the other. You can also add an arrow to a point. But you cannot add two points: there is no special origin. A good picture is the plane without its coordinate axes.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
